Welcome the New Decade With Trends from the 80's and 90's

Hey Everyone! I've Been working really hard to find some cool trends for 2010 and I'm so excited to share one of the trends I think will be big. I could just go on and on about sequins, every fashion magazine seems to think they're groundbreaking, but to me, this trend is losing is luster. hehe I'm so punny :) Don't get me wrong though- I LOVE sequins, I just want some new ideas! So here they are-

Sorry to contradict myself here, but what I think will be new for 2010 isn't exactly new, its actually kinda old. So lets take a look back at some awesome 90's grunge (lovelovelovelovelove) and a bit from the 80's. Shall we?

Above are some classic 90's grunge looks, don't ya just love all of the studs, ripped jeans, layers, boots, and leather? Yes, these looks are a little dated, but with a fresh twist they'll be perfect for the new decade. I definitely plan on trying on trying to rock the grunge look in the new year, maybe with out the huge permed hair... ew. Tons of celebrities have been wearing outfits inspired by the grunge look, especially Taylor Momson and Mary Kate Olsen.

All you need to rock the 90's look is a band tee, ripped jeans, chunky books, plaid, and some studded jewelry. Add in whatever you please, because this look lends itself to many different interpretations- so whatever your style is, I'm sure you can work this look.

The next revival from decades past, is from the good old 80's. I'm not talking neon colors and MC Hammer pants here... this look is more subtle. The mega shoulder pads of the 80's are back! Ok...Maybe scaled down a bit, but strong shoulders are all over the runways.

Above are some typical 80's outfits, each one complete with some hugeeee shoulder pads. I have to say there not that great... below are a few outfits from Balmain's spring 2010 collection.

I can't help but notice that these outfits also have a bit of that grunge quality to them, 2 trends in 1!

Above is Rihanna wearing a jacket from the same Balmain collection. Notice the big shoulders? Here they are chic, not dated looking. I guess one way to rock this trend would be to pick modern pieces that are very tailored, and then accent the shoulders. This can even be achieved with a puff sleeve.

Finally, here are two dresses that definitely remind me of the 80's, but in a good way.

Balmain spring 2010 collection again. reminiscent of an 80's cocktail dress.

This is from the Lanvin spring 2010 collection, (picture form Harper's Bazaar) you cant see the big shoulders as well in this picture... but they're there! And more obviously the bright pink color looks straight from the 80's.

I hope you all enjoyed my first fashion post! I'm definitely planing on giving my wardrobe a look back at the 80's and 90's, how about you? Please leave a comment and tell me what you think! There will be more trends for 2010 to come, so come back soon!

forever fashionable,
Elise
