Statements

Sorry about not posting an outfit for the last few days! My wardrobe is feeling kinda dry, I need to go shopping sometime soon and find some fun new pieces to mix it up! Although I can't right now, as I am grounded :( oh how teen issues suck. Anyways, my friend asked me to do a post on accessories, so here it goes:

I've been doing a little, ok a lot, of online window shopping and found some really cool stuff that I think is perfect for spring. In my mind at least, there are two huge trends going on right now. The first is the tough, industrial, rocker look thats been really huge this winter. We're all too familiar with it, shredded jeans, leather, and studs. The second one, which I am favoring a bit for spring, is the hippie look. It has that easy going/laid back/carefree aura that is spring. Layers of prints, chic clogs, and messy hair, (along some peace love and happiness) are what this look is all about.

These two really different looks actually have one thing in common: amazingly perfect statement necklaces that complete any look.

Ranjana Khan fantasy bib necklace
$290 Saks

 Circa 78 wildflower necklace
$38- UO

The above necklaces speak for themselves. ummmm love??? a lot. I wanted to give a splurge/save example, they are pretty similar, except for the price tag!

            Space Oddity Necklace
             $495- Assad Mounser

                 fiona paxton mesh
                chain bib necklace
                     $200- Saks

The space oddity Necklace? AMAZING. Not to mention it embodies both trends.
with chains and spikes, but also with those purple mineral pieces and the agate stone that beautifully contrast with the hard industrial feeling of the chains. I adore the fiona paxton necklace also, it reminds me of a dream catcher.

       Fringe Trim Necklace
         $12.80- Forever21

          NC bis Necklace
             $130- shopbop

These two would add edge to any outfit. I would even go as far as saying that they are a must have. Add something like one of these to a simple ensemble and it instantly makes it more interesting with out over doing it.

Now, for people like my friend who are wondering how to wear these, no fear! Its really easy! Keep the rest of your outfit simple, especially the other accessories. All you need is a ring or two along with one of these beauties, and your good to go. An open neckline works best to accentuate the necklace, but a higher neck, like a t-shirt works too. I just noticed that my last two outfit posts also included kinda big necklaces, so look there for inspiration.

PS- Tomorrow I am going to costume design bright and early, basically where we make the costumes for the school play. Its really fun and I think I might take some pics and post them later tomorrow.

Welcome the New Decade With Trends from the 80's and 90's

Hey Everyone! I've Been working really hard to find some cool trends for 2010 and I'm so excited to share one of the trends I think will be big. I could just go on and on about sequins, every fashion magazine seems to think they're groundbreaking, but to me, this trend is losing is luster. hehe I'm so punny :) Don't get me wrong though- I LOVE sequins, I just want some new ideas! So here they are-

Sorry to contradict myself here, but what I think will be new for 2010 isn't exactly new, its actually kinda old. So lets take a look back at some awesome 90's grunge (lovelovelovelovelove) and a bit from the 80's. Shall we?

Above are some classic 90's grunge looks, don't ya just love all of the studs, ripped jeans, layers, boots, and leather? Yes, these looks are a little dated, but with a fresh twist they'll be perfect for the new decade. I definitely plan on trying on trying to rock the grunge look in the new year, maybe with out the huge permed hair... ew. Tons of celebrities have been wearing outfits inspired by the grunge look, especially Taylor Momson and Mary Kate Olsen.

All you need to rock the 90's look is a band tee, ripped jeans, chunky books, plaid, and some studded jewelry. Add in whatever you please, because this look lends itself to many different interpretations- so whatever your style is, I'm sure you can work this look.

The next revival from decades past, is from the good old 80's. I'm not talking neon colors and MC Hammer pants here... this look is more subtle. The mega shoulder pads of the 80's are back! Ok...Maybe scaled down a bit, but strong shoulders are all over the runways.

Above are some typical 80's outfits, each one complete with some hugeeee shoulder pads. I have to say there not that great... below are a few outfits from Balmain's spring 2010 collection.

I can't help but notice that these outfits also have a bit of that grunge quality to them, 2 trends in 1!

Above is Rihanna wearing a jacket from the same Balmain collection. Notice the big shoulders? Here they are chic, not dated looking. I guess one way to rock this trend would be to pick modern pieces that are very tailored, and then accent the shoulders. This can even be achieved with a puff sleeve.

Finally, here are two dresses that definitely remind me of the 80's, but in a good way.

Balmain spring 2010 collection again. reminiscent of an 80's cocktail dress.

This is from the Lanvin spring 2010 collection, (picture form Harper's Bazaar) you cant see the big shoulders as well in this picture... but they're there! And more obviously the bright pink color looks straight from the 80's.

I hope you all enjoyed my first fashion post! I'm definitely planing on giving my wardrobe a look back at the 80's and 90's, how about you? Please leave a comment and tell me what you think! There will be more trends for 2010 to come, so come back soon!
